About Me
My passion is language and anything related to language. I love the languages I am fluent in (Arabic, Spanish and English), how the native speakers of these languages think in them (which is how foreign learners of the language may stand out if they have not been immersed in the culture), not to mention the history of the peoples who speak these languages (which helps my skill-set surpass the linguistic area and include other realms), and how these languages are changing, especially in a more globalized word.
I am also interested in the literature, philosophy, sociology, and history produced by the cultures that speak, read and write in these languages. People who love foreign languages truly understand the meaning of cultural diversity, and I wholeheartedly embrace it.
I regularly watch and read the news in Spanish and Arabic (as well as my native English), and keep myself up to speed regarding what is happening in the world. This is something I have always done ever since I started learning these two beautiful life-defining languages, as I have held the belief (to this very day) that foreign press plays an extremely important role in the strengthening of language skills.
On a more personal note, I love jogging, swimming, bicycle riding, cross-fit, etc.
This has been my logo for close to 20 years. And it was elaborated by an Arabic calligrapher, Sheikh Nizar Al-'Iraq, who was working with me at the same religious institute I was teaching at in Dubai, UAE. I told him what I wanted and he created it.
If you know Arabic calligraphy, you can make out my surname "Colangelo", which in Arabic is كولانجيلو, followed by the following letters in order from right to left: ج ج ي ع ع.
Each letter represents a name and in Arabic is as follows:
جون جوزيف يوسف علي عبد الله
